This famous Waikiki beach was named in honor of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku who was a gold medal Olympic swimmer, credited with introducing surfing to the outside world. Kahanamoku Beach is bounded by the Ala Wai small boat harbor and the Hilton Hawaiian Village catamaran pier. A shallow offshore reef protects this beach from the big waves, making it a great swimming area for families. This hard-packed beach has the only shade trees on the sand in Waikiki. It’s great for families with young children because it has both shade and the calmest waters in Waikiki, thanks to a rock wall that creates a semiprotected cove.
