The Ironman World Championship takes place in Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i every October. In addition to the 1,800 professional and age-group qualifiers, 100 legacy and 100 lottery athletes compete in the world’s most prestigious triathlon.
The top 1,800 triathletes from around the world (including 50 countries & all 50 states) converge on Kona for this Triathlon Super Bowl event, featuring a 2.4-mile ocean swim off Kailua Pier, a 112-mile bike course to Hawi and a 26.2-mile run. This is for the big one – a world-class sports event with world-class triathletes that have trained for years!
Swim, Bike, Run. The top triathletes start the swim in Kailua Bay at 6:30 a.m., after the 2.4 mile swim, triathletes take to the road on their bikes for a grueling, always hot and generally windy, ride up Queen Kaahumanu Highway past the Waikoloa resorts, up to the small town of Hawi. After returning to Kailua Pier area, the 26.2-mile marathon begins.
